You must reroute copper or pex tubing to fix a water leak that is under a Post Tension Slab.
It is actually quite common to fix copper water lines that are leaking under a post tension slab. The pictures above show marking the location of the cables and any conduits and then simply hammers or cutting the slab up between them. This is an approved repair method from engineers that specialize in post tension concrete foundations.
Post Tension Slabs are thinner than standard slabs and jack hammering them will seriously weaken them.
The average post tension slab foundation is between 8 and 14 inches thick. The average standard slab is usually 4 to 6 inches thick. Once the copper water leak is repaired under the slab the concrete is drilled and doweled with epoxy coated reinforcement bar. Concrete, typically 4,000 psi, is then poured under the existing slab a few inches and finished off level with the floor. 4,000 psi concrete is stronger than most curb and gutter system that 80,000 pound big rigs drive over. The repair does not structurally affect the home.

Post Tension Slab Cables can break and fly apart violently creating a serious hazard.
This is a myth primarily focused on because of the way the cables are stretched when they are installed. These cables can have several thousand pounds of force on them, but they are not rubber bands. These are aircraft style twisted cables and if broken will only move a few inches if cut through or broken.
This is a typical Post Tension Slab Repair. This is from a parking garage. Notice the marks on the slab where the tendons were located. This was damaged from a core drilling project. In the lower right quadrant of the phot you can see part of the core hole.

Once broken or cut, Post Tension Slab cables either cannot be repaired or are extremely difficult to repair and may involve extension concrete work in your home.
The repair for broken post tension cables in a concrete slab is little more than clamping turnbuckle. It grips each end of the post tension cable and a left and right hand threaded fitting is mechanically turned with a hand wrench until the tension is correct. Once post tension cable is repaired it is inspected by an engineer to ensure correct application and tension
Fixing a Post Tension Slab is extrememly expensive once a cable is cut or damaged.
Most repairs are between $1,500 and $2,000.
So why is my plumber stating that I must reroute or repipe my home when I have a Slab Leak under a Post Tension Slab?
Most of the time it is simply ignorance. Most plumbers have never gone to school or joined an organization that provides classes on repairing plumbing. Many contractors, after attending school for a year, get their contractor’s license and only focus on a small segment of the plumbing industry. True, they may have 10 or 15 years experience, but the experience they usually have is 15 years of the first year experience just duplicated over and over again.
Rerouting is usually more money and more profitable. Many people don’t want their floors damaged and it is easier to “go with the flow” and reroute. I can get any number of plumbers to put in writing that a post tension slab must be rerouted and many insurance adjusters will back them up. It is a huge myth that is not supported by fact whatsoever.
